They Are The Champions

The baseball season is a long one. Much can happen from April to October. Going into this season, I had high hopes for the Toronto Blue Jays. They had loaded up through trades and free agency and looked to be a strong contender for postseason play. It was the first time since they won back-to-back World Series in the early '90s that they had looked so strong.

Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox were coming off a last-place finish in 2012 and didn't look much better this year. I figured they'd win 75 games and be a pretty lousy team. Making things even more interesting was the fact that former Jays manager John Farrell had taken the Boston job vacated by Bobby Valentine. It became fairly obvious during the 2012 season that Farrell wanted the Boston gig, which didn't endear him to the media or fans in Toronto. I figured this would be a fun season for a change.

Boy, was I wrong about everything. The Jays sucked right out of the gate, and even though they put together an 11-game winning streak in June, injuries and crappy starting pitching landed them in the division's basement. Meanwhile, the Red Sox improbably confounded all expectations by winning the AL East, then the ALDS and ALCS. Down was up, cats were sleeping with dogs, etc.

I'm not a bandwagon jumper and I wasn't necessarily rooting against the Sox but I wasn't rooting for them, either. But when Deb was able to score two tickets to the potentially World Series-clinching Game 6 at Fenway Park vs. the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, I was excited to go. I had never been to a World Series game before, we got the tickets relatively cheap and no matter what happened, the atmosphere would be electric. We didn't want to drive in because of all the street closings, so we took the T from Malden.

We got to Kenmore Square almost two hours before game time and it was mobbed. Lines outside bars that went down the street. We picked up our tickets and got something to eat before going up to our seats in the right field roof deck. They were pretty nice, way up there but with a full view of the field. The game itself wasn't overly suspenseful. The Red Sox were able to light up Cards pitcher Michael Wacha for 6 runs in 3 2/3 innings and Sox starter John Lackey worked out of a few jams; by the end, it was just a matter of rooting for everyone to make outs so we could see the celebration. The final score was 6-1 and the place went nuts. We watched the presentation of the World Series trophy but left before they handed out the MVP award to David Ortiz so we could beat some of the crowds.

Things were pretty hairy outside the ballpark as crowds had already gathered in the street by the Cask and Flagon. We fought our way through the crowd and were routed around Kenmore Square, which the police were keeping empty. We decided not to try and get to the T station there and ended up walking all the way down Commonwealth Avenue to Boston Common, where we got on the Orange Line at Downtown Crossing. It was a good move because the trains there were relatively empty, as opposed to the mob scenes we would have dealt with on the Green Line. From there, we got to Malden easily and were home by 1:45. Later, we heard about all the drunk idiots out tipping over cars and doing stupid shit, but fortunately we were able to avoid all that. Thursday was pretty rough from the lack of sleep, but it was totally worth it.

I'm happy for the Sox and their fans. Hopefully my Jays can get their act together in 2014. Hope springs eternal, right? If the Sox can go worst to first, why can't Toronto?

Stuck In Thee Garage #8: November 1, 2013

Last night featured an extended tribute to the late Lou Reed and an hour's worth of Canadian good rock. Song of the day: Ride With You - Blackfoot

Easy day. I only had 1 class. The assembly was pretty good. The speaker was one funny dude!

We had a pop quiz in Adv Math and I got it all right.

I got home at 12 and bummed around till 3. [Buddy] gave me a ride to practice. Coach worked our butts off in our last practice.

- The Barbarian

Thursday, October 18, 1984

Song of the day: Lap of Luxury - Jethro Tull

Good day. The Psych test was easy. I hope I get an A. I got an A on my fourth program.

We had our last hurrah today. We beat the crap out of Somersworth, 8-1. I played most of the game but I didn't score, dammit! [Teammate] got a hat trick, [another guy] got 2, [another guy] got 2 and [yet another guy] scored the last one. [Another teammate] had like 20 shots, all close but no cigar. At least we went out with a bang!

Song of the day: Closer to the Heart - Rush

Fast day. I got up at 8:30, took Mom to work. I went to the Methuen Mall at 11. I spent $60! I bought 3 albums, Dokken--Tooth and Nail, Santers--Guitar Alley and Anvil--Hard and Heavy. I bought 1 blank 60-min tape and 2 90-min Maxell tapes. I also got the last 2 Thomas Covenant books. I bought a book of stamps. I met Jeremy and his girlfriend there, too. I got home at 2.

We went to see "Thief of Hearts." It's a good flick.

Song of the day: Eruption - Van Halen

Strange day. I got up at 10. Went to work. the work was beat. We got out at 10. [Girl I like] sat with me in my car for a while. We put the seats back and started making out. It just sorta happened, y'know? I got home at 10:45. Phew!

- The Barbarian

Sunday, October 21, 1984

Song of the day: Can You Deliver? - Armoured Saint

Today sucked. I was doing price changes all day. I went home for lunch. Both Mom and Dad started bitching at me and want me to quit tomorrow. I told Mom to call up and tell 'em herself. They don't want me working during school. Now that's beat.

[Cute nerdy girl] came to the Bucket. She said she'll give me a ride home tomorrow. Yeah!

- The Barbarian

Monday, October 22, 1984

Song of the day: Break the Walls Down - Stone Fury

Today was alright. I got a 94 on that Psych test, a 100 and a 49 on 2 different Adv Math quizzes.

[CNG] gave me a ride home. But she had to go to the dentist so all I got was a hug and a kiss. Maybe tomorrow.

I taped Powerslave, Defenders of the Faith and 1984 after school.

Mom called up the Bucket and told them I quit.

Song of the day: Losfer Words (Big 'Orra) - Iron Maiden

Good day. We went to Salem to go shopping. First we looked at computers. Then we went to Kealey Farms. Right next door practically is Rainbow Records! I went there. It's awesome! They've got tons of imports, magazines and metal records. I bought the 12-inch of  Rush's "The Body Electric." On the flip side were "Analog Kid" and "Distant Early Warning." I also bought 2 issues of Kerrang!, one on Rush and one on Maiden. That store is great!

I returned the saline solution and bought a new one.

We set back the clocks an hour tonight. Good deal.

Song of the day: The Song Remains the Same - Led Zeppelin

Today was alright. I went to church for the first time in a while. Later I took the garbage to the dump. On the way back, the guy in front of me slowed down alluva sudden. I locked 'em up (Dad's car) in front of Pond View, leaving a massive skid mark. Whew!

Then we went to the Newington Mall. I bought Dad a $25 pen and I am now broke. Mom got me a Sharp calculator and a cool looking winter jacket ($70). We looked at a Commodore computer. It was way cheaper. Dad says we're gonna get it! Alright! Only thing is, they're gonna hook it up to my TV. Oh well.

Boring day for the most part. The sports banquet went till 9. [Coach] spoke the longest. I got a letter, a pin and a certificate. I looked cool in my sports coat, blue cords, tie and sneakers. Quite studly, indeed. Afterwards, me, [buddy] and Jeremy went to Pizza Hut. I asked Mom if I could go to the movies tomorrow and the _____ said no! I can't believe it. And with another one of her famous feeble excuses. "Well, you need to hear some 'no's' in your life." Give me a friggin' break, willya?

I think I got an A on the Field Bio test today. [Classmate] lost my story in Journalism.

- The Barbarian

Postscript: Two weeks worth of entries and some interesting developments. My mom made me quit my job at Market Basket because she thought it was taking too much away from my studies. I like how I at least made her quit for me. Of course, the worst part was not having any income.

A few encounters with girls. The most promising ones were the girls who worked at Market Basket and of course, I wasn't going to be working there anymore so that sucked. I had always wondered what happened to that girl I made out with; did a little Internet research and I think she's married to a chick now. Which is cool, but she certainly seemed into me for a very brief time in 1984.

Totally forgot that the Tommy Shaw song was so big on the radio. You certainly don't hear it anymore. Ever. And listening to it again, it's not hard to figure out why. It suck-diddly-ucks:

RUSH CONCERT!

Song of the day: Finding My Way - Rush

Top 5 at Five
1. Red Barchetta - Rush
2. I Can't Drive 55 - Sammy Hagar
3. Pride (In the Name of Love) - U2
4. Pink Cadillac - Bruce Springsteen
5. I Wanna Rock - Twisted Sister

The day started off lousy. I met [Cute Nerdy Girl] in Guidance. She told me the truth. Her father didn't want her seeing me because I was dark-skinned. She was pretty pissed. Oh well. I guess I should expect that sort of thing.

At 6, [drummer dude] came by. He had some burnouts in the car with him. They were going to Lowell to buy some drugs or something. Then we had to pick up his girlfriend from Amesbury. By the time we got to the Centrum, Fastway was almost finished their set. I was pissed. But then Rush came out! Man, what an excellent show! They were incredible! Geddy, Alex and Neil all kicked ass! They played 7 songs off Grace Under Pressure, a lot of stuff off Moving Pictures and Signals, "Temples of Syrinx," "In the Mood," "Finding My Way," "Closer to the Heart." It was great. We had good seats. I saw [three buddies from school] and got a ride home with them. Thank goodness. I got home at 12:15.

What a night!

Bye, [CNG].

Song of the day: In the Mood - Rush

I got up at 11 this morning. We went to Methuen right away. I bought a Maxell 90-minute blank tape. By the time we got home, it was 3. I took the car and went to the field house. After I got changed, I went out to my car to look at the Kingstonian I picked up earlier. [CNG] was just arriving on her bike to watch the game. I said hi and we talked a bit. I then went to warm up.

We beat Farmington, 3-0! [Buddy] scored 2 goals and [another guy] the other. Farmington's a pretty bad team. They all bunched up and stood around. [Our regular goalie] played left wing for the last quarter. He played pretty good! Next is St. Thomas on Friday.

2. Girls With Guns - Tommy Shaw
3. I Wanna Rock - Twisted Sister

I got up at 6. They were hot-topping the rest of the driveway at school today. I got a 100 on that Psych quiz. Tomorrow I have tests in Field Bio, Adv Math and Psych.

There was no soccer practice today, so I came home and taped my Ratt and Scorpions (Sting) albums. Sounds good.

I got all my college application forms out.

Song of the day: Blue Highway (live) - Billy Idol

I had to work all day today. We went to Papa Gino's for lunch. [Drummer dude] was fired Wednesday. Geez.

We didn't get out till 7:45 because the back room was such a mess.

San Diego beat the Cubs. Now they play Detroit in the World Series. Who woulda thunk?

Song of the day: Bears - Zebra

Today sucked. Totally. I got a 73 on the Field Bio test, a 76 on the Adv Math test and an 82 on the Psych test. I couldn't believe it.

Then, in our practice, we lost a scrimmage with the JVs, 2-0. Can you believe it?

Dad saw some psychic who said I would be getting into either drugs or booze soon. Yeah, right.

Song of the day: The Duellists - Iron Maiden

We lost against Pittsfield, 2-1. I couldn't believe it. I didn't play so I was pissed. Coach is mad because we screw around too much.

Mom decided that we won't go to Yale on Sunday.

Later.

Song of the day: Heaven's On Fire - KISS

I got up at 9. I mailed my Ach test forms. Then I took the garbage to the dump, deposited $68 in the bank, bought 2 money orders to pay off my RCA bills. I also ordered 2 speakers for my Walkman from Columbia.

After all that, I went to work. Mom dropped me off. I gave [hot chick from work] my picture. She's gonna give me hers tomorrow. She likes me. Wow.

Song of the day: You're Still Laughing - Fee Waybill

What a day. I fell asleep in Adv Math. We lost to Winnacunnet, 4-1. I played right halfback. I ate at McDonalds and then Mom made me eat dinner at home. So I got a wicked bad stomach ache. It lasted from 8:30 till I fell asleep. Ugh.

Song of the day: Bad Girl - ZZ Top

Today was a bit better. I got an 85 on that Computers quiz and I finished my 4th program. We had an optional practice today, but I didn't go.

I started filling out my college applications tonight.

Postscript: That Rush show was quite the adventure. I was so clueless about dope and stuff and was so paranoid that we'd get pulled over. Worked out pretty well that I ran into some friends at the concert and got a ride with them. I never really saw that dude after that, although we're now friends on Facebook. In retrospect, missing most of Fastway's set was no big deal; they were horrible. Rush was great, especially for a fanatic like me. I ended up seeing them twice on the Power Windows a year later, and haven't seen them in the 28 years since.

More soccer games I didn't play much in. Being a benchwarmer sucks. Oh well, there was only a game left in my high school career, anyway. I became much more of an athlete after college.

I should've at least asked that girl from Market Basket out. Not sure why I didn't, really. Stupid! The situation with CNG and her dad was one of the few times I ran into actual racism at this school. One thing that always nagged at me a bit was the fact that I never met the guy, so how did he know what I looked like? Unless she told him, I guess. I had no reason to doubt her story, but it was a little out there. Certainly not unheard of, though. I've run into her a few times over the years; she's been married a couple of times, has a couple of grown kids.
